Day one was at Infineon raceway with Zoom Zoom where my pace is usually in the low 1:50's and since I hadn't been back there since November it was more of a fun day to get reacquainted with the track. Weather was sunny with ambient temps in the upper 70s. Tires were new and off the warmers I ran 32F/30R psi. The performance of the tires was outstanding and wear was as expected with plenty of tread life left for the next track day.
Day two (the very next day) was at Laguna Seca with Keigwins. This was my first time riding this track so much of the day was spent learning and experimenting with lines. Weather was sunny with ambient temps in the upper 70s. Off the warmers I ran the tires at 32F/30R psi. Pace wasn't all that quick with laps in the mid 1:40's but after getting some suspension help from Dave Moss (www.feelthetrack.com) I really started to have fun. Turn one is a blast and passing through the corkscrew had me laughing all the way down the hill. It's something else turning laps on the same tarmac where so many legendary battles and riders have rode. Tire wear was starting to show but plenty of tread for another day.
Day 3 came 2 weeks later at Thunderhill with Zoom Zoom. (This day was a fantastic gift from my girlfriend; she got me a day with Ken Hill of the Yamaha Champions School and www.FasterSafer.com). Thunderhill is known to beat up tires and the ambient temp was in the mid 80s, although there was some cloud cover throughout the day. I increased the tire pressures off the warmers to 33F/32R anticipating increased tire flex (I was just guessing and these are not recommended pressures). My pace at Thunderhill is just under 2 minutes but we started off at a lower pace and increased it throughout the day so I could work on riding skills. The tires held up great but as our pace improved I finally started to notice some wear on the front indicating overheating (I think). So I added .5 psi which helped stiffen it up a bit. By the last session of the day our pace was getting quick and with worn tires the bike was starting to move around a bit more. Ken pointed out a ridge/flat spot developing on the front and I noticed something similar on the rear when I got home but this wear pattern is expected. The tires worked great every session of the day and provided enough feedback that I could tell they were getting a bit tired without any big surprises.
That's 3 days of riding on track at 80-90% and the tires never really developed any problems that caused a drop in confidence. Working with Ken also taught me how to make better use of the tires which improved their usability even after extended use. There's always a financial balance you need to find as a racer. You want your gear to last but you need to use as much of the available performance as possible. Having tires that I know I can get a few days out of depending on how I ride will really help my racing budget. The more I ride these tires the more stoked I am with them.
